The TikTok AI Ads Keep List

The four things I'd keep when TikTok's AI runs your ads, one at each step, and the seven-day test to run this week.

01 What you hand over now

When TikTok put its ad account inside Claude, it left out 26 tools, almost all of them billing. The AI can't pay your bill. It can set your budget and launch a campaign.

TikTok announced eight AI products on October 5, most with no launch date. Three are live now:

The chat connector. It uses MCP, a plug that lets a chatbot such as Claude use your ad account. TikTok Ad Network. Your ads in other apps, now open to U.S. advertisers. Automatic search keywords. TikTok buys search terms you never picked.

TikTok promises you keep full control over what goes live. Here's the one thing I'd keep at each step.

Ten minutes today. In TikTok Ads Manager, open the search term report and the placement report. Count the search terms you'd never have bought, and the apps you don't recognize.

02 Keep one: the chat reads, it doesn't launch

TikTok says a connected agent can create campaigns, adjust budgets, refine audiences and optimize creative.

It can launch. In one tutorial, Claude asked to use a tool, then created a campaign and pushed it live. The presenter paused it by hand.

Connect it with limits

With a paid Claude plan (Pro or Max), search for TikTok in Claude's Connector Directory, connect, and sign in with your TikTok for Business login. Open the connector's tool permissions. Each tool can be set to needs approval, always allow, or blocked. For the first week, let it read and report only. Anything that creates, launches or changes a budget stays on needs approval. As you work, Claude offers "always allow". Never take it. TikTok's authorization runs out after 30 days. Calendar it: a free review date. Before you reconnect, look at everything it changed.
03 Keep two: the search term report, weekly

Smart+, TikTok's automated campaign system, now runs its search ads. You give it at least one keyword, and it adds more searches it thinks match your ad.

On by default for small and medium businesses. You're not notified when a keyword is added. The report folds every automatic keyword into one line, with the ten that spent the most in a dropdown. Some matches show as "unknown": no keyword triggered them at all.

TikTok says in its own testing, automated keywords drove 10% more conversions while hitting the cost target. That may well be true. You just can't see what you paid for unless you look.

Open the search term report, weekly. It lists the searches your ads ran on.
Start with the unknown row. These matched with no keyword behind them.
Move the good terms into your own keyword list. TikTok's help centre suggests this too.
Block the rest with negative keywords. A negative keyword is a search your ad must never show for.
04 Keeps three and four: where it runs, what runs

Where your ad runs

TikTok Ad Network puts your ads in nearly 400,000 other apps. You get a top 100 publisher list before a campaign, a placement report of where they ran one to two days after spending, and a block list for up to 10,000 apps. TikTok's help pages describe no list of only the apps you allow.

When the network is a placement, budget moves toward whichever placement performs better. In the U.S., Smart+ and automatic placement also include Lemon8, TikTok's lifestyle app, by default for eligible objectives.

Decide placement when you build the ad group. An ad group is the level inside a campaign where targeting, budget and placement are set. Placement can't be changed later.
Switch the block list on. It's in Ads Manager's brand safety tools, and works only once switched on in the ad group's settings.
Give the network its own ad group. So you can measure it on its own.

What actually runs

In February, the games publisher Finji found ads it hadn't made running from its own account, with AI, it says, turned off. Your settings tell you what you switched on. They don't tell you what's running.

The approval rule
Any TikTok ad with a person, a product claim or a price:
[NAME] sees the version that runs before it goes live.

Every [DAY], [NAME] checks what's live from our account.
05 The first test: your ad against TikTok's pick

One split test inside Smart+. Same product, same budget, same placement. Seven days. Judge it on cost per purchase or cost per lead, not clicks. The chat connector stays read only until the test is done.

My seven-day split test
Product: [PRODUCT]
Budget per ad group: [SAME FOR BOTH]
Placement: [SAME FOR BOTH]
Ad group A: the creative TikTok's system recommends, my approval on
Ad group B: my own best ad: [AD NAME]
Start: [DATE] End: [START DATE PLUS SEVEN DAYS]
Judge on: cost per [PURCHASE / LEAD], not clicks
Result A: [COST] Result B: [COST]
What it taught me: [NOTE]

If TikTok's pick wins, you know where to hand over first. If yours wins, you know what the AI still can't see about your customers.
