Three Rules Before Claude Edits Your Docs
Claude now edits Google Docs, Sheets and Slides under your name. Set three rules first, so every change still gets checked.
On October 6, 2026, Anthropic put Claude inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides. It's a sidebar that reads the file you have open, plus whatever you've selected, and changes the file for you. You install it once from the Google Workspace Marketplace (Google's app store for Workspace) and it shows up in all three apps. It's in beta, on every paid Claude plan.
Anthropic's help page is plain about how it edits. Edits happen in place, as you. Google records them under your name. Your collaborators see the edits. They don't see what you asked it.
Now think about how a team reviews a document. Someone suggests a change, someone accepts or rejects it. Someone leaves a comment, someone answers it. That's the pencil layer, where mistakes get caught.
Claude writes in ink:
So a colleague who opens the proposal later finds new figures under your name, with no suggestion and no comment explaining why. They can't tell which numbers you checked and which you just allowed.
Clicking Allow isn't the same as reviewing. It asks Google for two permissions: one to show a sidebar, one to view and manage the file it was opened in. Anthropic says it can't see the other files in your Drive, your email or your calendar, and that Google enforces the limit.
The dial is connectors: add-ons that let Claude reach other apps. Turn on the Google Drive connector and it can see your other files too. That one is off by default, so it's a choice someone on your team makes on purpose.
Some things it never does, even if you ask: share the file, give anyone access, or change who owns it. And in any mode, it stops and asks before it adds a link, inserts an image from the web, or removes someone's access. There's no "always allow" for those.
You pick the mode at the bottom of the sidebar:
Install for one group (Workspace super admin)
"This application is not allowed by your administrator." Many organizations block Marketplace apps by default. If your team sees this, it's a decision waiting on the admin, not a bug.
Anthropic says it doesn't train its models on this content, and that inputs and outputs are deleted within 30 days. There's no extra price if you already pay for Claude. A Team seat is $20 a month, billed annually.
When writing gets this cheap and lands under your name, I think the scarce skill on a team moves from writing to checking. So don't just ask it to write the proposal. Ask it to show its work.
Docs: This brief is [X] pages. Cut it to [Y] without losing any of the numbered requirements.
The first is Anthropic's own example prompt for Sheets, with cell H42. The second is its example for Docs, cutting a 14 page brief to 6. Both give the next reader something to check against.
The point. Use it to make the document easier to check, not just faster to make.
