The Canvas Upkeep Checklist

The checks to run before you touch Shopify's Canvas: who made your theme, which parts of your store come from apps, and what to write down before you publish.

01 Who made your theme

Canvas is Shopify's new way to design a store: every page laid out on one board, and Sidekick, Shopify's AI, changing the theme's files when you type what you want. Your theme controls how your whole store looks and is laid out. Shopify's help pages say a theme you edit in Canvas doesn't receive theme updates, opens only in Canvas, and can't be downloaded. So the first question is who made your theme. If you're not sure, your admin can tell you: Shopify's Help Center points to its page on theme sources.

Your theme Canvas? What you give up
Made by Shopify (Dawn, Horizon) Works The updates Shopify keeps shipping: new features, design improvements and bug fixes
Bought from another designer on the Theme Store Not supported, for now Nothing yet: Canvas can't open it
Custom, built by a developer Works Uploaded themes don't get automatic updates anyway. The bigger loss is the files: you can't download them

About the updates. Shopify's automatic updates are for fixing bugs or security issues. Shopify's words are that a Canvas theme doesn't receive theme updates; my reading is that those fixes stop reaching it too.

02 Which parts of your store come from apps

Look at a typical store. The review stars under a product, the email pop-up, the chat bubble in the corner. A lot of that comes from apps, added to the theme as app blocks or app embeds. Canvas can't add or set those up. On October 1, 2026, a Shopify staff member told app developers they plan to support apps in Canvas within the next few weeks. As of October 17, 2026, I couldn't find an announcement that it has arrived.

Walk your live store. Open your home page, one product page, one collection and the cart. Write down every widget you see: reviews, pop-ups, chat, loyalty, upsells.
Match each one to its app. Most come from an app you installed. Note the app's name next to each widget.
Countries and languages. Canvas can't tailor a theme for different markets yet, and translations go through the separate Translate & Adapt app. Note if you sell in several.
03 Before you duplicate

In your Shopify admin, under Online Store, the menu next to a supported theme has Duplicate in Canvas. That word sounds like a backup. It isn't. It makes a second theme, and from then on the two never talk: changes to the copy don't reach the original, and changes to the original don't reach the copy. You can still edit the original in the normal editor.

Note the date you made the copy. Anything you change on the live store after that date won't be in the copy.
Note your live theme's version. Under Online Store, click the theme's version number to see it.
Keep a list of live-store edits. Example: you change the announcement bar to a new shipping message. Publish the Canvas copy later and the old announcement is back.
04 Before you publish: three checks

Publishing a theme replaces the one your customers see; the old one moves to your draft themes. So before you publish anything from Canvas, run three checks. Review the preview at each width, desktop, tablet and mobile.

Before I publish from Canvas
Store: [NAME]
Theme made by: [SHOPIFY / THEME STORE DESIGNER / DEVELOPER]
Copy made on: [DATE] Live theme version: [NUMBER]
App widgets on the live store: [LIST]
Still there in the Canvas preview? [YES / NO for each]
Live-store changes since the copy: [LIST] Added to the copy? [YES / NO]
Checked on desktop, tablet, mobile: [DATE]
Who looks after this theme from now on: [NAME]
05 Which store you are
A new store that doesn't depend on apps: build it in Canvas. That's the store it was made for. A store that runs on apps: keep your live theme in the normal editor and use Canvas on a copy to try ideas. Shopify staff said much the same: merchants who depend heavily on apps can keep using the editor and use Canvas to experiment. A store in several countries or languages: wait.
