The Two Doors Checklist

Every setting to check this week now that Google's Universal Cart is live: which door your store is on, what each door shows you and hides, and how to keep your listings exact.

01 What moved: the cart

Universal Cart is Google's shopping cart for shoppers. Since October 15, 2026, shoppers in the U.S. can save products from different stores into one cart in Google Search, AI Mode and the Gemini app. That cart lives in the shopper's Google account, not on your website.

The cart keeps working after the save:

Price drops and restocks. It can alert the shopper when a saved item gets cheaper, or when something sold out is back in stock. Promo codes and cards. It shows promo codes and suggests which card in the shopper's Google Wallet to use. You don't see the saves. Google's developer guide says Google holds the items itself and only contacts your store when the shopper taps to send the cart over. Merchant Center shows buy clicks, purchases and cart transfers, not saves.
When you drop a price, everyone who saved that product can hear about it from Google, not from your email list.
02 Check which door you're on

There are two ways out of the cart. The shopper pays right there with Google Pay, or sends the items to your own website and finishes there. Google says your store stays the seller of record either way.

If you run a store on Shopify, you may already be on door one. In September, Google emailed eligible U.S. Shopify merchants that their products were eligible for its checkout, with nothing to set up. On those stores it's switched on by default.

Find the setting. In your Shopify admin, open Sales channels, then Agentic. Note whether Google's checkout is on.
Check your inbox. Search the email linked to your Merchant Center for Google's September message about checkout eligibility.
Look at Merchant Center. Its pages for this checkout show buy clicks, purchases and cart transfers. Check them weekly.
03 The two doors, side by side
Door one: pay inside Google Door two: cart transfer
The order Shows up in your Shopify admin like any other Placed on your own site
Your tracking Google Analytics and custom pixels don't fire, according to Shopify's help pages as reported by marketing outlets Your checkout, your upsells, your tracking
Upsells and custom fields Some blocks may not show Yours, on your site
Local pickup Not offered Whatever your site offers
The catch The sale can be missing from your analytics One way: if the shopper changes the cart afterwards, Google doesn't sync it back

Neither door is wrong. One trades your visibility for less friction. The other keeps your checkout but adds a step. What matters is that you choose, instead of a default choosing for you.

If you keep door one on, count those orders in your Shopify admin each week and compare them with your analytics, so the sales your analytics can't see are still in your numbers.

04 Keep your listings exact

The price alerts only work if Google has your real price and your real stock. And the record of what a shopper approved is moving into the payment network: American Express's new framework has the shopper approve what an AI agent may buy (the store, the budget, the product) and checks the order against it. Amex says its protection is coming soon, not live.

Same price everywhere. Google says it doesn't allow a higher price on Google than on your own site.
Real stock. A restock alert built on a wrong stock count reaches shoppers you can't serve.
Brand, color, size in every listing. A purchase gets checked against what was asked. A wish like "the best running shoe" may not be covered, because nobody can check it.
Returns ready. Google says customer support stays with the store, and Amex's planned protection starts after the shopper starts a return with you.
