The Instagram Originality Check

Find out if Instagram still shows your posts to strangers, sort your last 30 days into three piles, and turn reposts into posts Instagram counts as yours.

01 Followers see you, strangers may not

Instagram is testing an app that opens straight onto Reels, the feed Instagram says is built for reach beyond your followers. For a small business, that feed of strangers is where new customers find you.

Instagram runs two systems. One ranks posts from accounts you follow. The other, which Instagram calls recommendations, decides what you see from everyone else. The rule below only touches the second one.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram. If most of what you post to Instagram is someone else's content, "your account is no longer going to be recommendable."

It judges your account, not one post. To estimate whether a post is original, Instagram looks at what you posted in the past and other signals. Since April 30, 2026, accounts that mainly post content that isn't original, in reels, photos and carousels, are not shown in recommendations at all. It's a rolling 30 days. You're back in once most of your recent posts count as original. Original is winning. Meta says three out of four recommendations on Instagram in the U.S. come from original posts.
02 What Instagram counts as yours

Instagram published the line itself. It's stricter than most people think.

Doesn't count Counts
Your watermark on someone else's video A photo or video you shot yourself
Adding subtitles, a border, or credit in the caption Anything you designed, like a how-to guide or a photo series
Speeding a clip up (per reports on the announcement) Your own text on the image that adds context, not just describes it
A screenshot of someone's post, name showing (per reports) Graphics that add new information, or the remix feature
The test is one question: does your version add information, context or a point of view that wasn't in the original?

It's not a clean line. A model makes the call (Mosseri's word is "estimate"). Instagram gives no number for "mainly", and Meta hasn't published detailed guidance for old memes. And originality isn't a quality score: it gets you into the room, it doesn't make anyone watch.

03 The 30-day check
Open Account Status in the Instagram app. If you've been pulled out of recommendations, it shows there. It's also where you remove posts or appeal.
Scroll your last 30 days of posts. Reels, photos and carousels all count.
Sort every post into one of three piles. Use the tally below.
If "Reposted it" is the biggest pile, start there. The only threshold Instagram gives is the word "mainly".
30-day tally
Dates: [FROM] to [TO]
Made it (I shot or designed it): [COUNT]
Changed it (I added information, context or a view): [COUNT]
Reposted it (someone else's, little or nothing added): [COUNT]
Biggest pile: [PILE]
04 Turn a repost into your post

Keep sharing other people's things. Just change how. Mosseri's advice to accounts that repost: remix it, make it your own, with a green screen, your own words on top or your own commentary.

A customer's unboxing video becomes you reacting to it and explaining what they got. A viral clip from your industry becomes your take on whether it's true. A screenshot of a nice review becomes a graphic you designed, with what it means for the next customer. This one is my judgment call: Instagram hasn't ruled on it.
Before you post anything you didn't make
The original: [WHAT IT IS, WHO MADE IT]
What I add: [INFORMATION / CONTEXT / MY POINT OF VIEW]
How it shows: [GREEN SCREEN / MY WORDS ON TOP / MY COMMENTARY / REMIX]
05 Post for the stranger

Mosseri calls it breaking content, meaning breaking through. Instagram shows a public account's post to some people who don't follow it. If it does really well, it shows it again, and again. Those people don't know your shop, so a post that only makes sense after your last three loses in the first second. Instagram's own Reels guide says to keep it high quality, original and engaging from the first second.

Put one post a week into a Trial Reel. It goes only to people who don't follow you, never to your profile or followers.
Judge posts by rates, not totals. Of the people who saw it: what percent liked it, what percent sent it to a friend, how long they watched.
Leave room in your week for something current. Meta says over half of what Instagram's main feed recommends is less than a day old.

Do this today. Open Account Status, then count your three piles.
